Low Water Pressure on Upper Floors: Causes and Fixes
By Eng. Md Shakhawat, Lead Electrical Engineer · 2026-10-18

Short answer: most Dhaka buildings feed flats by gravity from a rooftop tank, so top-floor flats naturally get the lowest pressure — there’s very little height between the tank and their taps. Other common causes are clogged aerators, partly closed valves, rusted old GI pipes, or an undersized pump that never fills the tank.
Find the cause in five minutes
| Check | If yes |
|---|---|
| Only one tap is weak | Clean the aerator / shower head, check its angle valve |
| All taps in one bathroom are weak | A valve on that line is partly closed or blocked |
| Whole flat is weak, neighbours below are fine | You’re close to the tank — consider a small booster pump |
| Whole building is weak | Tank isn’t filling: pump, foot valve or supply problem |
| Water is brown at first | Old GI pipes rusting inside — replacement helps flow |
Fixes, from cheapest
- Clean aerators and shower heads — limescale and sand block them.
- Open and service valves — old gate valves often stick half-closed.
- Replace rusted GI lines with PPR — restores flow and stops rust.
- Booster pump for top floors — a small pressure pump for one flat.
- Right-size the main pump — use our pump calculator for an estimate.
Pump safety
Every pump needs its own correctly rated breaker and proper wiring. Our electrical division installs the pump’s power line and MCB in the same visit.
